Over Coming My Fears

by

Kim & India Dixon

Hello! I’m India and boy do I have a story for you. I was getting ready for the Big Relay for Life Kids Walk at Hodgson High School. My mother registered me and my brother Donovan to participate. I was really excited about participating and I really wanted to make a difference and help sick children. But, there is one thing that you should know about me. I don’t like clowns! Well, wouldn’t you know it; we showed up to the Kids Walk and picked up our shirts at the registration booth. I was in great mood and I was so excited, until I saw….guess who? Ronald McDonald, the most famous clown in the world! No one told me that he was going to be here. All of a sudden, I had to go to the bathroom. After went to the bathroom, I just wanted to leave and go back home. I thought to myself, this guy is going too messed up my whole entire day and I just got here. Well, mommy grabbed my hand and Ronald came real close to me. Mommy told him that I was afraid of clowns; and do you know what this clown had a nerve to say to my mom? He looked at my mommy and then he looked at me and said, “Well, if I see any clowns, I’ll let you know.”  Doesn’t he know, he is a clown? What’s wrong with this guy? I actually thought his comment to mommy was kind of funny, but I didn’t feel like laughing at the time and to add insult to injury, my brother Donovan who is one years old, took a picture with him and mommy. I thought to myself, aren’t they scared? I wondered to myself, why isn’t Donovan crying? Boy, he’s brave! Mommy looked at me and told me that there is nothing to be afraid of. She told me that it’s just someone’s daddy dressed up like a clown. My anxieties started to go away. We finally started the walk and wouldn’t you know it, here’s Ronald McDonald again leading all the kids in the walk. My brother and I walked 3 laps. It was great! After we walked our laps, I went to get my face painted. I got a flower on my face. After I got my face painted, headed over to the big tent to hear a story teller and wouldn’t you know it, here comes this clown again. He had a nerve to sit right in front of me and he said to me, “That’s a nice flower” and he even gave me the thumbs up as to say, I’m doing a good job! What’s wrong with this guy? Doesn’t he know that I don’t like clowns and I’m afraid of them and why is he trying to be my friend? Well, the storyteller finished his story and it was time to go home.  Mr. Ronnie got into to a van and off he went back to McDonalds. The day was over. What a lot of excitement for one day. Donovan and I were very tired from all that walking. We went home and took a nap. When I woke up, I went down stairs and told mommy, Guess what mom, I like Ronald McDonald and I’m not afraid of clowns anymore.
